Film Distribution - Part 6

1.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean 1 was extremely successful therefore meaning that people would go to see the second film, despite the fact that it's a good film or not.
  • Usually a sequel is made if the first movie is so successful. The first movie grossed $654,264,015 at the box office highlighting how popular the franchise is.
  • Due to the first films popularity, the second one was advertised all over the place. (on the side of buses, buildings, billboards etc) - it was hard not to go and see the film.
  • The attraction of Johnny Depp was another reason as to why it grossed so much at the box office. (Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom as well).

  • Cloverfield was extremely successful for many reasons. They released a teaser trailer very early, which begun to create buzz and hype around the film. The fact that they released it so early meant that 'word of mouth' would have been more effective as people knew about it much earlier than normal.
  • They created 'Buzz' by opening up chats on social networking sites and blogs and in turn letting more people become aware of their film.
  • I personally think that the 'found footage' films, such as 'The Blair Witch Project' and 'Cloverfield' are not becoming 'too tired' but the increasing number of them recently could certainly be suggesting that this is the way it is going. I feel as though they have an edge to them but with more and more being made, this 'independant' style being lost.

5.
  • I sadly agree with the statement that the audience of tomorrow is online. Many young people, who are the target audience for most films nowadays are online talking and socialising to friends on sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The way forward for many film distributors is to promote there films online as well as everywhere else. Cloverfield, for example was successful because blogs etc where setup discussing it and creating 'hype' around the film. Some film sites, such as the Looper website are extremely interactive and this is likely to attract an audience member instead of your more traditional 'passive' website. Sites, such as Love-film and Netflix are increasingly advertised on TV nowadays promoting films and encouraging people to go onto the internet and create a login account. Everything in todays modern times have some sort of connection to the internet and so making the importance of it increasingly important. DVD prices have gradually plumeted in recent years and no longer, are people travelling to buy a DVD. They are streaming it online instead.
