Alien - Trailer Analysis




  • Genre is defined immediately as Sci-Fi, with the iconic sound and opening shot of planets, which establish to the audience a sense of the 'unknown'. 
  • USP - immediate suspense and enigma.
  • 1.11mins into clip - no bankable names, no studio
  • Slowly forming title held on screen for a long time - highlighting its importance and our focus should be on that. 
  • Heartbeat noise - creating suspense, which grabs the audience attention. 
  • selling fear and returning focus on the attractive female character. 
  • Fear - high pace montage, sound, final line("in space, no one can hear you scream") - horror/thriller. 
  • emphasis on hybrid genre - horror film taking place in space. 
  • escalates in sound and action to final silent tag line - echo at end to cement. 
  • selling special effects - ahead for the time? 
  • Active audience - has to piece together the graphics and wait for the final line, which reveals more to us. 
  • the return shot to the cat - Suggest predatory nature of film, animal in distress suggests something is wrong.
