Eastern Promises Trailer Analysis - Research and Essay Task

Adhere to the genre:

  • Instantly shown an establishing shot of a crime scene with a forensic team looking for evidence to link to the crime, which is clearly a death - links with the thriller Genre as the audience are instantly asking questions about what has happened and what the consequences will be. The quick cut from the establishing shot to a mid of the dead man Adheres to the Crime/Mystery genre as it suggests that the man has been murdered and this causes the audience to again question what has happened and why.
  • "We think he might be Russian Mafia" - suggests more about the genre through the mention of "Russian Mafia" and again introduces and adheres to the genre of the movie. The dark, brooding music in the background certainly emphasises the importance of this mans death and heightens the importance of the involvement of the Russian Mafia. The fact that they are mentioned early in the trailer, suggests that they have importance to the overall story and plot of the film and again suggests what type of the film the audience are going to be watching. It explicitly informs the audience of the style of the movie.
  • The white, almost gloomy tinted colour on the screen adheres to the genre of the film as well. It connotes the hard-hitting lifestyle of someone involved with crime and directly contrasts to that of Hummingbird which almost glorifies Statham's lifestyle even though he is involved in crime. It promotes the darker side of Crime, though the dark mise-en-scene (black, grey clothes and muddy beach side) and the cold white tint on the screen. This causes the audience to think actively about what is going on and view crime in a different way as to in "hummingbird", which again adheres to the chosen genre, something we would like to replicate. Perhaps show a mixture of the two different styles (china-town and big london lights with dark more sinister looking alleys/streets).
  • Focus Features introduced after powerful mid-shot image of man with tattoos covering his body - highlights the importance of the man and adheres to the crime/thriller genre of the film. The Tattoos, as mentioned by the investigator are of importance to the characters identity ("if you don't have tattoos, you don't exist") - something that has influenced us as we would like to hint at important features of ones character that identify him from the rest of stereotypical action/thriller characters.
  • Classis Gun shot sound bridge - used in almost all Thriller trailers to mark the importance of the previous shot/s and adhere to the Thriller genre. It also suggests a change in tone as seen in this trailer. Starts as quite a dark and sinister opening until the Gun shot and then switches to something less sinister (woman in hospital - sad) with more peaceful music.
  • Another convention of Crime/Thriller films is to have the main character 3-dimensional - similar  to hummingbird.
  • Bankable Actors involved - Nicole Kidman etc.
  • close up shots of the diary suggest it's importance - something we would like to replicate in our trailer - have a central theme of importance and focus the audiences attention to that. They successfully do this during this trailer.
  • "Director of a history of violence" - suggests a lot about the movie itself and informs the audience on the style of film they are going to watch. It is also a good way to attract a larger audience if they have seen that particular film.
  • Similar to most thriller trailers, the main title appears at the end of the clip, in order for the name to stick in the memories of the audience members watching it.
  • three part structure - incident, build up, climax.
