Hummingbird Trailer Analysis - Research and Essay Task

  • Adhere to genre - Action, Crime, Drama, Thriller - introduced to genre instantly with the establishing shot of the London Skyline, suggesting the themes of Crime/Action.
  • Action straight away, which again adheres to the genre of the film as combat, linked with dark alleyways and questionable neighbourhoods are major themes. This also identifies the characters with where they are from, again adhering to the crime genre of the film as crime is often linked with lack of wealth - this is shown through the fast pace editing and close up shots, suggesting some sort disagreement and the only way to resolve this, is through fighting. The quick panning shots of the bins falling over and the long shot of the long dark alleyway, connotes a lot about the characters wealth at this point and adheres to this idea of crime being linked with wealth.
  • "Joey, Don't fight back" - suggests something about this characters past, which is important when adhering to the Genre of the film as usually characters in this situation have had a troubled past and that is why they are involved in crime.
  • Production/Distribution companies introduced instantly, after the initial action, which causes the audience to remember them and to a certain extent, suggest the style of film these companies usually produce.
  • Tick-Tock noise - adheres to the thriller Genre extremely well as it keeps the audience on the edge of their as they know what Statham's character is doing is wrong and that he could get caught out at any minute. Crime genre is adhered to here as he is breaking into someones house - the tick-tock noise creates the tension, which causes the audience to view the shots actively instead of passively.
  • fast paced nature of the trailer again adheres to the thriller genre as it suggests the ever-changing, dangerous world of crime, which is something we would like to create in our movie trailer.
  • The mise-en-scene is used effectively in this trailer to suggest the change in wealth within Statham's character. He turns from a man, dressed raggedly, with long hair and dirty cream coloured jacket to a man wearing slick suits. This change in wealth adheres to the genre of the film, CRIME. Clearly some sort of crime is involved as Statham's character is living in someone else's house and making money extremely fast.
  • The love interest - it is clear from the trailer that something is going to happen between the two main characters in this film. This breaks away from the life of crime and suggests that Statham's character is a more three-dimensial one, instead of your standard action/crime/thriller character. The use of close ups suggest that their is more to his character than meets the eye, which is something that was of influence to us when deciding upon our genre.
  • "I've got to get my life back together" - This again suggests a lot about the characters past, which seems to be a major theme in most crime/thriller films, as that is the main reason as to why they are involved in this sort of lifestyle in the first place. This has certainly influenced our choice of genre and we aim to convey a lot about our characters past in our trailer.
