Gangster Squad Trailer Analysis - Research and Essay Task

Adhering to the genre:

  • Begins with mid shots of a boxer, whilst fading in between each shot - creates mystery - common convention in crime/thriller trailers is to employ the use of a fade to put emphasis on the previous shot or sequence - in this case, it is suggesting that the character is strongly involved in the crime and that he is important to the story.
  • They use Low key Lighting to adhere to the film noir aspects of the genre - also shown through the choice of Mise-en-scene (trilby hats, long overcoats, shadows created using this).
  • Often a common convention in many crime/thriller trailers is to introduce the audience to the 'bad guy' first using a montage of shots and having him narrating over the top.
  • Much of the first 27 seconds before the first introduction of the production companies, involves what appears to be the main 'bad guy' - use multiple close ups with tilts and pans to highlight his importance to the storyline.
  • They choose to hold the final image of the 'bad guys' face for longer than usual - this again emphasises his importance and leaves a lasting image with the audience. We know their is going to be a slight change in tone after this but we are aware that he will be central to the story.
  • They present the 'Mob Boss' in a fairly glamorous way - eating in expensive restaurants etc - similar to hummingbird - the 'lavish' side of being a criminal is presented to us in the first part of the trailer despite the dark colours.
  • Mid-shot from behind the man in the trilby hat, whilst following him down the corridor - one of many different shots that adhere to the thriller/film noir genre. Extra significance is put on the chosen shots for this trailer in order to display the genre clearly to the audience.
  • Crime/Thriller conventions - cut from action to a phrase such as "inspired from" etc - used throughout the trailer with a sound boom to emphasise the image on screen.
  • Fast paced editing - Cuts from images of money, guns and the gangsters - suggest the style and tone of the movie - adheres to the specific genre of the film by showing these common conventions seen in crime/thriller style movies. USP - money, guns, attractive woman.
  • Emma Stone's character - presented as an object of desire through the low angle shots and close ups of her red lips - common convention in crime/thriller films is to present the lead woman as an object of desire - she is usually presented in an extremely glamorous way - glamorous dress, red lipstick etc.
  • Sharp sound almost cutting up the selection of shots towards the end and then presenting each actors name before finally revealing the title of the film. Actors name is followed by a short mid-shot profile of each character. Montage is extremely effective as it adds a sense of sharpness to the trailer, especially in conjunction with the the sounds - gives it a high-budget, slick feel - creates an interest in each of the characters amongst the audience as not much is given away.
  • Final sequence is used to adhere to the genre of action/thriller and to leave a lasting impression on the audience.
  • narrative - the storyline is presented to us without revealing much of the film - through the use of montage, continuity and motivated editing.
